Disadvantages of Radiant Floor Heat
Replace Old Flooring
Heating and cooling are usually part of the initial design of a home. To install a radiant heating system, once you have moved in or into an older home, is a little more difficult. You have to remove and replace your existing floors. It is recommended that you install your in floor heating systems when you’re in the process of renovating or installing new floors. Generally the most popular choice of flooring is tile, as it conducts heat the best.
Installation Time
Usually a self-levelling compound has to be applied on top of your floor heating system, and this compound has to be totally dry before the floor covering can be put on. The dry time takes around a day or two, if a water -based system is used then installation time is longer.
Floor Height Issues
Radiant heated floors need to be installed on top of a subfloor, so your existing flooring will be raised by about an inch. This can be an issue if you have doors that swing into the room, they may not clear the new flooring. Most people also add some insulation boards to maximize the system’s efficiency, this causes another inch to be added to the floor. The additional height may be a problem if the room is already short.
