Avoid Air Conditioning Problems With Jeff’s Tips
With the current heat wave we are having here in Saskatoon these days at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning we are getting many calls from customers saying that they are having air conditioning problems. There are many reasons that your air conditioner may stop running but by far the main reason that tops the list is simply that it is dirty.
Many of us don’t pay attention to our air conditioner, after all we only really get to use it for 4 or 5 months out of the year. Because of this we tend to forget that our air conditioner needs some simple love and attention too. But what can you do?
Change Your Furnace Filter
First and foremost check and change your furnace filter on a regular basis. The advice that I like to give customer is to check your filter once per month. Pull it out and visually look at it. Hold it up to the light. If you feel that there is still good light passing though the filter, then put it back in and carry on.
If not, then change it with a new, clean filter. A dirty furnace filter will impede the airflow over the evaporator coil and can cause your evaporator coil (the item that sits above your furnace) to freeze up. Good airflow though the furnace is key to having a properly operating air conditioner.
Clean Condenser = Air Conditioning Problem Solved
Most people already know this, but one lesser known fact is the condenser outside needs to be cleaned as well. You can certainly contact us at JOB Heating & Air Conditioning to clean this for you and in some cases where this has never been cleaned, as shown in the picture on the right, you will require us to come and clean it up for you.
This picture shows a unit that was only 3 years old but the homeowner was never told to clean it. We needed to remove the outer jacket to properly get it clean. All you need to do to clean it is make sure that the unit is turned off, take a garden hose about 12″ to 14″ away from the side of the unit and spray down at an angle. Do this on the coil (looks like a radiator) once per year in the spring and if necessary a second time to get all poplar tree fluff gone. That’s all it takes!
I recently spoke with a customer that has been doing these two simple things since they had their air conditioner installed and this is the first year they had a problem that required JOB’s attention. How long ago did he have it installed? He told me 40 years ago. It’s amazing what a little TLC will do for equipment.
Check and change your filter, clean your condenser and enjoy your summer because heating season is coming.
