Do you have an ultra-efficient furnace?
Winter in Saskatoon, here we come!
We live in Saskatchewan and no matter what some people may tell us, winter, for sure, beckons. Our grandparents used to spend most of their summer preparing for this inevitable season. They would put the work in to make preserves from the kitchen gardens, butcher animals they raised over the summer and then hunt what they could.
What they also did was cut up wood. The average house back in the day used to use 7 to 10 cords of firewood for a winter season. For those of us that still like to cut up wood, we know how much work this is! It would be harvested, bucked up then split to enable it to dry, so it could be used as good firewood. Not to have your firewood ready for winter was almost a death sentence. Why? Because it gets cold here in Saskatoon, very cold!!
Firewood to the Rescue.
Back in the days during wintertime, first thing every morning, you would have to go outside and bring in as much firewood as you could carry in a wooden box. The box would usually be enough to keep the house warm for a day. Kindling is always used to start a fire, the damper would be opened all the way to get the fire burning well until the coals started to form. The main wood stove was in the kitchen and usually, Mom would also use the stove to cook on. She would keep the fire going all day. Which means she would be adding wood every 1 to 2 hours. After supper, someone would have to fill the wood box again for the night. This is why the kitchen was ( and still often is ) the main room in the house. Everybody was there because that was where Mom fed you and it was toasty warm. The other rooms of the house were generally quite cold because there was no ductwork or fan to spread the heat around.
What a pile of work!!
Would most of us be willing or able to live that way now?
Thankfully, today, we have natural gas piped directly into our homes from the main pipelines that come from the gas and oil fields to keep us warm. Today, most of us don’t give a second thought to how our house is warm, yet without this heat, you wouldn’t survive our winters in Saskatchewan.
Today, modern furnaces are ultra-efficient using less natural gas and less electricity than ever before. If you want to reduce your carbon footprint and save money then maybe it’s time for you to replace your old inefficient furnace.
