Get Your AC Unit Ready for Fall with These Easy Tips
Just like many of the large appliances in your home, it’s important that you take the time to prepare your air conditioning system for the fall. Though it’s always wise to trust any air conditioner maintenance to a Saskatoon air conditioning professional, there are some simple things that you can do yourself. These steps are particularly handy when getting your system ready for the fall.
For portable indoor air conditioning units, you simply have to unplug, clean and store them. Additionally, remember to change any filters that require attention. When prepping indoor centralized systems, be sure to inspect it for cleanliness and check the filters as well to see if they require changing. It’s advisable to change your filters twice annually.
If your home uses an AC Unit where the unit is located outside, you’ll need to dedicate a little more time to prepare it for the cooler months. Unplug the system and then hose it down gently to remove any dirt or debris that may have accumulated during the spring and summer. Next, take care of the system’s pipes by covering any that are exposed with foam to prevent freezing during the colder months ahead.
Once the outdoor AC system is cleaned and pipes covered, cover your entire unit with a vinyl or plastic cover. Make sure it is waterproof and fit for covering an external AC unit. Keep the cover fastened in place by wrapping ropes or cords to prevent the cover from blowing away. Be sure that the roping or cords you use are waterproof, as well. If they aren’t, they may give way with exposure to rain or snow causing costly damage to your unit.
Moreover, during the fall and into the winter, be sure to regularly check on your AC unit, especially if it is located outdoors. Take time to remove debris that may build up such as pine cones, falling leaves or even snow.
At any point while preparing your AC unit for the autumn, should you feel uncertain about something, don’t hesitate to contact a Saskatoon air conditioning contractor for help. Remember, it’s always better to hire an expert to perform some preventative maintenance than it is to have to replace your AC system!
